Low carbon housing in the West Midlands

Report coverAn important report in the West Midlands’ aim to achieve its carbon reduction targets was launched on 23rd March 2009.

Low Carbon Housing – developing a baseline for refurbishment in the West Midlands (pdf, 1.59mb) was jointly commissioned by the West Midlands Regional Assembly and Advantage West Midlands.

Amongst the report’s findings was the fact that the West Midlands will need to spend an additional £189.1 million per year on installing energy efficiency measures into homes, which equates to an additional 68,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, if it is to meet its CO2 emissions target.

Census white paper sets out plans for 2011

Helping-shape-tomorrowThe government has published a White Paper, Helping to shape tomorrow, setting out plans for the 2011 Census. The Census will take place on Sunday 27 March 2011 and will be the first undertaken by the new UK Statistics Authority.

Unlike previous Censuses, most of the forms will be posted out this time, with only around 5% being hand delivered. There will also be an opportunity to complete the forms on-line for the first time. Despite these changes, the estimated cost will still be nearly £500 million.

The questionnaire for 2011 will be slightly longer than in 2001.

Quality of life in Bromsgrove

Bromsgrove District Council carried out its second Quality of Life Survey (pdf, 292kb) earlier this year to assess how its residents feel about life in the district.

The survey was sent to a random sample of 1500 households and returned a 47% response rate.

The survey sought to understand residents’ views on a range of topics including climate change, recycling, housing, health and community safety. Continue reading
